Modern Theatre
Project Type: Historical Renovation
Service: Coordination
Client: Suffolk University
Stats: 60,000 sf / $42 million / Year: 2009
The Modern Theatre was first opened in 1876 as the Dobson Building, and underwent several alterations in the coming century. In 2009, Suffolk University renovated the building - completely rebuilding the existing structure, but maintaining the historic facade.
Prefix (then Spectrum) was part of the construction team, initially doing the 3D model of the architecture, structure and MEP for the new building.
Façade Coordination - Brick By Brick
During construction, the façade had to be removed and replaced exactly as is.
Prefix Modeled the façade brick by brick, with each brick labeled individually. Each brick was then cleaned and stored by the mason and eventually replaced in the same location. This involved close collaboration with the mason, as each joint’s expansion, mortar and offset characteristics had to be recorded and replicated precisely to reconstruct the façade.
